About Abeica Abaris Blanco

At the foothills of the Sonsierra, in the Riojan village of Ábalos, lie the vineyards of Bodegas Abeica. These plots, rich in clay-limestone soils with sand, range from 450 to 590 metres in altitude. This diversity, far from being a hindrance, allows for the cultivation of different varieties, including whites, resulting in fresh and delightful wines that represent the lesser-known facet of the D.O.Ca. Rioja. Abeica Abaris Blanco is part of this narrative. But stop reading and see for yourself!
 
Abeica Abaris Blanco is a single-varietal Viura wine, barrel-fermented and aged for several months. This gem, conceived by the oenologist Ricardo Fernández, has been recognised by Suckling as one of the finest wines of 2024. Undoubtedly, it is unique not only due to its production but also its origin. Specifically, Abeica Abaris Blanco originates from Rioja Alta, the westernmost area of the denomination, where the highest concentration of century-old wineries in the world is found. In particular, Abeica Abaris Blanco thrives in the Santa Ana plot, planted in 1958, at approximately 540 metres altitude, where the ripening of the grapes is delayed as the altitude increases.
 
Regarding its production, Abeica Abaris Blanco is notable primarily for its double maceration: the first before fermentation; the second, immediately after (lasting six days), enhancing its aroma, colour, and flavour. The final touch comes from the French oak, with which Abeica Abaris Blanco will be in contact for less than a year.
 
The production of Abeica Abaris Blanco is extremely limited, making this white wine the best example of a way of understanding wine that is increasingly rare. We should heed the experts, shouldn't we?

On the nose, it presents notes of lime, passion fruit, red and green apples, quince, conference pear, white pepper, and clove, with a hint of lime yogurt. On the palate, it is very flavourful, with good acidity and a spicy profile that remains persistent. This Viura wine has a great deal of character and promises an intriguing evolution over time, offering a long and satisfying sip.
