About Aiurri

Rioja stands as one of the most internationally acclaimed denominations. And this is no coincidence. Its history, its soils, and its ability to evolve without losing its essence have made it an indisputable benchmark in the world of wine. Within it, Rioja Alavesa emerges with its own distinct personality, a region where tradition and modernity intertwine, and where each plot narrates a unique story.

Under the imposing gaze of the Sierra de Toloño, in the privileged village of Leza, this region unfolds its legacy of over 4,700 years of winemaking tradition. It is here that Aiurri, the renowned project by Alma Carraovejas in Rioja Alavesa, originates—a unique interpretation of small parcels of old vineyards that, through their grapes, tell the story of this unparalleled landscape. A name that in Basque signifies character, strength, identity, and is no coincidence: it is a tribute to the land from which it comes and to those who work it with respect and passion.

If there is a reference that embodies this essence, it is its namesake wine: Aurri. A wine whose old vines of tempranillo, garnacha, graciano, and other white varieties are organically cultivated, with cover crops that enrich the soil and enhance its microbiology. The vineyard thrives on silty-loam soils with a high limestone content, imparting freshness, minerality, and depth to the wine. The harvest is conducted manually, with a double selection of clusters and berries in the winery. Once in the winery, the entire process is carried out by gravity, preserving the integrity of the grape to the utmost. Fermentations are spontaneous, with gentle and controlled extractions in French oak vats and concrete tanks. Finally, the aging takes place over 16 months in French oak barrels of varying sizes, followed by a final blending in concrete tanks.

The result is Aiurri, an elegant, complex wine with a profound identity. A reflection of Rioja Alavesa, its soils, its history, and its character. A wine, undoubtedly, with soul.



 

2021

Aiurri 2021 reveals an intense bouquet that blends notes of dark chocolate, dried herbs, and black cherries. On the palate, it is distinguished by its abundant fine-grained calcareous tannins, providing a robust structure and a concentrated profile. With an austere and tense character, it offers a long and lingering finish. This wine is perfect for those seeking a red with personality and depth.
