About Alamos Torrontes

At Alamo, the new project set up by the Catena Zapata Argentine winery, they can boast of growing the world’s highest Torrontés. This white variety, which was brought to the other side of the sea in the 18th century by Spanish Jesuits, is grown between 1,500 and 2,000 metres above sea level in Cafayate, specifically in Salta.

By establishing Alamos Torrontes, this traditional winery from Mendoza (a province in the centre of Argentina), has moved to the north, also a reference point for viticulture. Marked by hot days and cold nights, this area has a warm climate and deep, sandy soils. The rest of the necessary nutrients and substances are provided by water from melting ice, which comes directly from the peaks, and helps the vine to develop (especially when the temperatures are very high).

All these nuances are enhanced in the winery with a pre-fermentation maceration. To do this, the grape pulp (obtained after processing the grapes) is left to rest for 24 hours at low temperatures (to prevent fermentation from starting). During this time the must stays in contact with the skins, extracting and enhancing both aromas and flavours. As soon as the next day arrives, Alamos Torrontes ferments with native yeasts for several days at a temperature between 14°C and 16°C (57°F and 61°F). Once this process, where the yeasts are put in the barrels, is finished, Alamos Torrontes rests in these same tanks for a time, with periodic batonnages, where the wine comes into contact with its lees.

Finally, Alamos Torrontes is bottled and released for sale. Hurry and don’t get distracted! There aren’t many opportunities to try these high altitude wines.
