About Alfred Merkelbach Kinheimer Rosenberg Riesling Kabinett

In the middle of the 20th century, technology and modernisation came to German wineries. Very soon the vineyards and wine presses became more like factories and laboratories than the magical places we are used to, where wine is made. However, there’s always an exception that proves the rule. There were some survivors, a pair that withstood the challenge. A bastion where things are still done manually, in the traditional way. A place where machines couldn’t cope with centuries and centuries of wisdom and knowledge. That place was the Alfred Merkelbach winery in the Moselle.

Now considered a cult winery, this company continues to produce wines. Its owners, brothers Alfred and Rolf Merkelbach, follow the rhythm of the vineyard, paying attention to every little detail required for cultivation. Their properties comprise just one hectare (spread over the vineyards of Ürziger Würzgarten, Erdener Treppchen and Kinheimer Rosenberg); but this fact increases the interest in these bottles if that’s even possible. In terms of variety, the queen is undoubtedly the Riesling, a grape that is perfectly suited to the highly eroded red and stony slate soils that abound in the Moselle.

In the winery, tradition is maintained by using noble and traditional materials (such as wood) and carrying out spontaneous fermentations, where intervention is kept to a minimum. The wine knows what it is doing and the winemaker just has to supervise and make sure everything goes well and doesn’t stray from the path it should follow.

Where the Merkelbach brothers are is the place to be. Where there is a good bottle of Alfred Merkelbach Kinheimer Rosenberg Riesling Kabinett, that’s all you need.

Alfred Merkelbach Kinheimer Rosenberg Riesling Kabinett 2021 is a white that you will quickly fall in love with. The fruity notes of this wine will quickly grab you with a delicious and very bright nose and palate. The nose is intense and very pure, with fruity and stony touches. The palate is elegant and light, almost creamy, with a very fine texture. Very rich and pleasant acidity.
