About Les Aubaguetes
Les Aubaguetes is a blend wine composed of the Garnacha and Carignan varieties, with 2% white grapes (Garnacha Blanca and Macabeo), crafted by the winery Álvaro Palacios under the D.O. Q. Priorat in Gratallops, Catalonia.
Its name, Les Aubaguetes, means "The Shady Areas" and refers to those plots where sunlight does not strike with as much intensity. The clusters used to produce this wine come from the estate of the same name located in Bellmunt del Priorat, a north-facing plot caressed by the sea breeze, achieving its balance thanks to the coolness that arrives from the north, boasting the finest old vines, some of which exceed 110 years of age. This exceptional vineyard is composed of soils predominantly featuring siliceous slate (llicorella) and is cultivated according to the principles of organic farming.
Upon arrival at the winery, the clusters are entirely destemmed and the berries are gently crushed. Alcoholic fermentation takes place in wooden vats with periodic punch-downs and under indigenous yeasts. The resulting wine undergoes spontaneous malolactic fermentation in wooden containers and subsequently ages for 16 months in wooden foudres.
Les Aubaguetes is a wine that exemplifies yet another success in interpreting the landscape and the characteristics of the terrain, where Álvaro Palacios excels with a unique talent for enhancing the essence of each corner of his vineyards in Priorat.

Les Aubaguetes Magnum 2022 is the first vintage classified as Gran Vinya Classificada. Beyond grand titles, this red wine speaks primarily of slate soils. On the palate, it is dense with hints of black fruits and red cherries. Very long and fresh finish.

| 2021 |
Les Aubaguetes 2021 is, according to Luis Gutiérrez, taster for The Wine Advocate, the most elegant, ethereal, and nuanced vintage of this red wine from Álvaro Palacios. On the nose, it offers a delightful complexity where aromatic herbs, citrus hints of blood orange, and aromas reminiscent of meat, blood, iron, or flowers, as well as juicy fruit, emerge. Its palate is flawless, with precise elegance, ethereal and delicate. A red wine that unfolds and surprises layer by layer, resulting in a unique experience.

| 2020 | Les Aubaguetes 2020 invites one to discover an explosion of sensations with each sip. On the nose, intense notes of ripe black fruits such as blackberries and plums stand out, intertwined with a subtle hint of aromatic herbs. On the palate, elegance and power merge with well-structured tannins and a long, persistent finish that leaves a lasting impression. The 2020 vintage presented challenges due to downy mildew, resulting in a reduced production, endowing the wine with remarkable concentration and depth. This uniqueness, combined with its complexity and balance, makes it an oenological gem that deserves to be known and enjoyed. | |
| 2019 | Les Aubaguetes 2019 unveils a unique expressiveness, characterised by a dark and earthy nature. As it nears the nose, profound notes of ripe black fruits, such as blackberries and plums, emerge, accompanied by a subtle mineral touch reminiscent of the slate soil from which it hails. On the palate, its texture is defined by granular tannins and a complex structure, distinctive due to the greater presence of the cariñena variety, which imparts firmness and authenticity. This wine stands out for its balance and traditional style, serving as a perfect ambassador of the Priorat terroir. It is worth savouring for its ability to convey the essence of its origin in every sip. |

| 2018 | Les Aubaguetes 2018 presents a concentrated and robust profile that is evident from the outset. On the nose, it unveils intense aromas of dark fruits, such as blackberries and plums, complemented by balsamic notes and a subtly earthy undertone. Its texture, defined by the Cariñena grape, is rich and enveloping. On the palate, it reveals abundant tannins, with a slightly dusty feel, providing a firm structure and a long, persistent finish. This wine is distinguished by its rustic character, typical of Bellmunt de Priorat, faithfully reflecting the exceptional terroir of this region. Ideal for those seeking wines with depth and authenticity. | |
| 2017 | Les Aubaguetes 2017 is an aromatically deep red wine with citrus notes on the nose that are characteristic of the Garnacha variety, accompanied by aromas of ripe red and black fruits and a mineral nuance. On the palate it is velvety, with strong tannins but also smooth and refined. A wine with longevity that will be extraordinary after five years in the bottle. | |
| 2016 | Priorat was characterized by a severe drought and heat. Following an autumn and winter with average temperatures and rainfall, spring commenced with an unusual drought and high temperatures. The flowering occurred successfully after an earlier onset, but the rains failed to materialize. Throughout the summer, the persistent high temperatures and absence of rainfall led to the earliest harvest on record. However, there was one beneficial event: the sea breeze known as 'garbinada,' which provided a gentle humidity to protect the chlorophyll-rich green leaves. Harvesting of the foreign varieties used to make Camins del Priorat began at the end of August, where they could indeed confirm the extreme conditions of the vintage. In the indigenous varieties such as Garnacha and Cariñena, particularly in the well-tended old vines, they displayed their greatest potential and beauty. |
