About Artadi Viña El Pisón

Artadi El Pisón is a red wine made by the Bodegas y Viñedos Artadi winery in Laguardia, Rioja Alavesa.

Bodegas y Viñedos Artadi’s origins date back to 1985, when a group of winegrowers decided to get together and start making their wines as a cooperative.

In 1992 the Lacalle took over the running of this cooperative with the aim of producing unique wines, wines that reflect their origin. They put all their effort into cultivating the vineyard, thereby giving greater prominence to smallholding wines. This led to them leaving the D.O.Ca. Rioja in 2015, without abandoning wine production in this region.

Bodegas y Viñedos Artadi currently has over 80 hectares of vineyards in La Rioja, with different characteristics, especially in terms of the composition of the soils. It is also part of the winemaking group that also consists of the wineries Bodegas y Viñedos Artazu (Navarre) and Bodegas y Viñedos El Sequé (Alicante).

Artadi El Pisón is the winery's smallholding wine, made with Tempranillo grapes from a vineyard planted in 1945 in Laguardia, 480 meters above sea level, on deep calcareous clay soils. Eco-friendly winegrowing is practiced in this vineyard, with certification from the 2016 vintage onwards. The average yield is 3500 kg / ha.

The grapes are harvested by hand and placed in 15 kg boxes, with the selection being performed in the vineyard itself. Once in the cellar they ferment with native yeasts in open wooden vats for 10-12 days with daily treading and a small pump-over. The malolactic fermentation takes place in new French oak barrels where the wine remains for 12 months.

2022
Artadi Viña El Pisón 2022 is a very special red wine with a strong mineral character. On the nose, it is very elegant and complex, with fine and delicate fruits that evolve towards more spicy notes. On the palate, it maintains this character with an enveloping and smoother structure. Very expressive and distinguished, with deep sensations.
2021
Artadi Viña El Pisón 2021 unfurls a spectrum of aromas with a predominance of ripe black fruits, such as blackberries and plums, interwoven with subtle hints of spices. On the palate, its presence is less concentrated than in previous vintages, which endows it with exquisite delicacy. A wine of robust structure, silky texture, and abundant freshness, it leisurely reveals its full magnificence in the glass. A superb and sophisticated red wine, boasting considerable ageing potential in the bottle.
2020 Artadi Viña El Pisón 2020 is a complex and enveloping red wine that offers fine aromas of red and black fruits on the nose, accompanied by notes of vanilla and liquorice and balsamic and mineral nuances. On the palate it is deep and silky and expresses itself with a natural elegance. A precise and very expressive red wine with enveloping tannins.
2017 In terms of climate, the 2017 vintage began with a winter of mild temperatures and moderate rainfall, followed by a spring with average rain and higher temperatures than usual, which favoured early sprouting. Like many wineries in the area, this vintage was marked by the fateful night of April 28, when temperatures dropped drastically causing frosts of catastrophic consequences. This frost, fortunately, had different effects on the crop, depending on the orography and the phenolic state of the vineyard. This way, in Artadi vineyard, the impact caused a 20-25% reduction of the harvest. In months following the frost, the weather conditions were frankly beneficial for the recovery of the vineyard, with temperatures and rains higher to the average in the region. Thus allowed harvesting with almost imperceptible phenolic differences. As Carlos López de Lacalle tells us, a great vintage that has managed to make adversity an occasion of virtue.
2016 Artadi El Pisón 2016 is a deep, complex and mature red wine. This 2016 vintage is one of the best that wine lovers can remember. It is exuberant on the nose, with notes of ripe red fruit and very distinguished mineral notes embraced by subtle toasted elements.
