About Badenhorst Ramnasgras Cinsault

South Africa is known as one of the “New World” wine producing countries. However, its winemaking tradition is not as new as we might think. In the Coastal Region, the most important denomination, vines grow on the oldest vineyard soils in the world and, specifically, in the Swartland district, a true wine revolution has begun that has changed the perception of the South African vineyard around the world. One of the people behind this is undoubtedly Adi Badenhorst, one of the first winemakers to settle in this region in 2007 with an estate of 60 hectares of granitic soil dotted with old vines. All this potential has allowed him to create small productions of superior quality.

One of the wines he releases every vintage is Badenhorst Ramnasgras Cinsault, which comes from 28 hectares of old Cinsault vines planted in 1956 that are grown on granite soils, and processed and aged respectfully on the Kalmoesfontein estate in South Africa’s Swartland denomination. Once the grapes have been harvested by hand, they are taken to the winery and destemmed and crushed to begin a natural fermentation without oenological additives, except for a small amount of sulphur. In the winery, the wine is aged in old 1200 litre foudres for 12 months.

Badenhorst Ramnasgras Cinsault is a superb version of the Cinsault variety, the workhorse of the South African industry. A wine that perfectly expresses the Swartland revolution.

2019

Badenhorst Ramnasgras Cinsault 2019 is an elegantly textured red wine brimming with aromas of dark and red berries, herbaceous undertones, and a hint of orange zest. On the palate, it is pure, refined, and captivating. This wine offers a mélange of fruity flavors, balanced with a precise acidic grip and velvety tannins.
