About Beaux Frères The Upper Terrace

If you look for information on any wine from Beaux Frères, the winery located in the Willamette Valley, Oregon (USA), you will see that although they are among the most prestigious, they are not in the spotlight of the famous Parker scores. The reason is obvious. Robert Parker Jr, creator and editor of the renowned The Wine Advocate magazine, owns the estate along with his brother-in-law Michael Etzel and Robert Roy, and is one of the people responsible for the results of their wines. So, bearing in mind that rating your own wines can’t be easy and that it wouldn’t be well received among colleagues in the industry, they avoid it year after year. It all started when while on holiday Michael Etzel discovered the wonders of the small AVA Ribbon Ridge and encouraged his two current partners to buy a pig farm and transform it into a quality winery. And although his wines never score, they are undoubtedly “parkerised” wines, i.e. in the style that the renowned “wine judge” likes to award more than 90 points.

This lush valley, famous for its fertile sedimentary soils, is the birthplace of Beaux Frères The Upper Terrace, a single-variety Pinot Noir wine that is cultivated following biodynamic and organic practices that respect the authenticity of the site. In the winery, fermentation occurs spontaneously with native yeasts. The wine is then transferred to French oak barrels, 30 to 50% of which are new. It stays there for 12 months and the only time the wine moves is when it is racked into the bottle. This results in an accumulation of CO2 which works as a natural preservative and allows much less sulphur to be used.

So, Beaux Frères The Upper Terrace is a wine well worth tasting. Undoubtedly the result of a combination of good decisions: excellent terroirs, minimal intervention and superb oenological knowledge. Parker’s word.
