With these words the prestigious publication Wine Spectator presented its "Top 100 Wines of 2020", the list of the 100 most exciting wines of the year. Castillo Ygay Gran Reserva Especial, in its 2010 vintage, was not only the only Spanish wine in the top ten but also achieved the much sought-after first position.
 
Castillo Ygay Gran Reserva Especial stood out among more than 11,000 wines from all over the world tried by a high-level tasting panel made up of specialist critics and professionals from the world of wine, thanks to the impeccable track record of Marqués de Murrieta, the Riojan winery which makes it, whose wines are known and admired all over the world. This choice isn’t only about the high quality of the wines tasted. An important factor to qualify is emotion: that enthusiasm and passion which a wine may be able to transmit to those who taste it and where Castillo Ygay Gran Reserva Especial has been the undisputed winner
 
It goes without saying that Castillo Ygay Gran Reserva Especial is the flagship wine of Marqués de Murrieta. It’s made only in excellent vintages with grapes from the gem of the winery, Finca Ygay. A wine aged for 24 months in American oak barrels and refined in the bottle for another 5 years and where, no matter how hard they try to explain it to you, there’s nothing like the experience of tasting it and thus being able to attest to its well-deserved nomination as "best wine in the world".

2011

Castillo Ygay Gran Reserva 2011 is the product of one of the best vintages in Rioja. A red wine which offers the traditional Rioja style with notes of vanilla, orange peel, red fruits and undergrowth. On the palate, it’s balanced and full of harmony. A delicate, elegant wine, with round tannins and citric acidity that promises a long ageing time and a surprising longevity.
2004 Extraordinary wine! It has an embracing attack in which the notes of fruit become more expressive and fleshy than in the nose and the wood is perfectly integrated. It is perfectly balanced. It shows a soft acidity, polished tannins and a very long and very persistent finish. A very, very elegant wine.

Intense maroon colour with tile red edges. Bright and elegant wine with slow-falling tears.

Under a set of intense, concentrated and strong toasted and smoked aromas released along with many spices, notes of leather, tobacco and cocoa provided during its long ageing, the notes of ripe red fruit are noticed. A complex and harmonic wine at the same time.
2001 The palate is elegant and attractive, then leads into a final complex leather and snuff.
