About Charles Joguet Les Petites Roches Blanc 2022

When we think of an artist, we envision someone who shapes the world with their hands, their gaze, and their sensitivity. But if a winemaker works with the most vibrant, capricious, and unpredictable material there is, namely, nature, can we not call them an artist?

In this light, a winemaker does not "produce grapes," but rather creates landscapes. They are a sculptor of time, a painter of the land, a composer of seasons... And if anyone understood this from the outset, it was Charles Joguet.

In the mid-20th century, in Chinon , in the Loire Valley (France), a young painter and sculptor decided to put down his brushes and return home to embrace the family vineyard. Until then, the Joguets sold their grapes to merchants. The usual, the logical, what "had always been done."

However, Joguet saw something different. He viewed those plots as a dimly lit museum filled with undiscovered works. Privileged vineyards between the Loire and the Vienne, each with its own personality and history. And he made a radical decision: vinify by terroir. Separate. Respect. Listen. Give each vineyard its voice.

In an era when mixing everything was the norm, it was a quiet revolution. It changed Chinon and anticipated an idea we now consider essential: wine as an expression of place.

After his retirement, his vision remains alive under the direction of Kevin Fontaine, who upholds the spirit of the house: rigor, sensitivity, and commitment to the land.

Among the wines that best represent this philosophy is Les Petites Roches Blanc. A chenin blanc from 2 hectares in Anché, on clay and limestone soils formed by small rocks—the petites roches—that give the wine its name.

Here, biodynamic agriculture is practiced, and the harvest is done manually in several passes. In the winery, wood is eschewed in favour of gentle pressing and a brief ageing in steel, allowing the wine to transparently showcase its origin.

The result is clear and vibrant: aromatic purity, crystalline tension, and a minerality reminiscent of wet stone. Les Petites Roches Blanc is more than a great Chenin. It is proof that, when the land is worked with sensitivity and conviction, viticulture becomes an art form that evolves with time, climate, and the human hand.
