About Château Carbonnieux
Although they have always been know for their white wines, they make some great reds too. In fact, there are very few château that are recognised for both; only 6 châteaux out of the 9,000 wineries in Bordeaux carry this title of Crus Classés for both reds and whites, with this winery given their status in 1959 during the official classification of the Grands Crus de Graves.
In the heart of the A.O.C. Pessac-Léogna (on the west bank of the Garonne), Château Carbonnieux has been producing high quality wines for centuries on 170 hectares of land in Léognan, on the outskirts of Bordeaux. These vineyards, which are equally divided between red and white varieties, were planted in the 13th century and are linked to famous names like Thomas Jefferson, the third president of the United States, who visited the area’s vineyards in 1787 during his time as ambassador to France. During his stay, he planted an American walnut tree, which still stands today at 30 metres high and 4.5 metres in circumference.
The A.O.C. Pessac-Léogna was established in 1987 and has a wide variety of soils. In addition to gravel, there are also limestone and sandy soils. As for the climate, it is influenced by both the Atlantic Ocean (which moderates temperatures) and the pine forests (which protect from salt, rain and sea winds). These influences allow the local vineyards produce quality grapes that are then harvested by hand over Château Carbonnieux’s 119 plots. The differentiation between the plots is maintained both in the vineyard and in the winemaking process. Each plot is exclusively dedicated to one variety (Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Sauvignon Blanc, Sémillon) depending on the soil type, with the aim of enhancing the aromatic finesse of the wines. They take great care over their land, using organic methods instead of insecticides, herbicides and chemicals.
The result of this work is up to 40 different cuvées of wine, depending on each plot, which will be organised by the cellar master depending on their characteristics. This produces magnificent wines like Château Carbonnieux, a classic red wine from the A.O.C. Pessac-Léogna for centuries. The work in the winery is also meticulous, with the grape bunches re-selected both before and after destemming. Following this, Château Carbonnieux 2020 is gently pressed and the grape pulp is placed in tanks, where it will macerate and ferment separately. During this process, which lasts approximately 28 days, there are frequent gentle pump-overs, with a particular emphasis on the cap (the top layer of grape skins that floats on the must because of the CO2 released during fermentation). This will result in a very strong colour extraction, which is characteristic of these wines. After fermentation, the wine is transferred by gravity to barrels, where it undergoes malolactic fermentation and is aged for 18 months. The final touch of Château Carbonnieux happens with the final blending, where the best batches are blended. Finally it is clarified (using egg white for the reds and mineral clay for the whites), and bottled.

| 2020 | Château Carbonnieux 2020 is a concentrated red, made with Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Petit Verdot. The nose starts with notes of tar, dark chocolate and liquorice, evolving into black plums, cassis, blackberry compote and smoked meats. On the palate it is medium-bodied, with firm, grainy tannins, a savoury finish and a fresh touch. A taste of juicy black fruits, blackberries, black olives, mushrooms and nuts. |
