About Château de La Dauphine

Château de La Dauphine is a red wine made mainly from Merlot and with a touch of Cabernet Franc. It is rated as a wine from the AOC Fronsac, in Bordeaux.

Château de La Dauphine is a winery whose origin dates back to the seventeenth century. It has changed owners a few times, among them the Moueix family, Jean Halley. It currently belongs to the Laburne family, who are advised by Pierre Rolland. At present the Château has 53 hectares of vineyards, thus being one of the largest properties in the Libourne region. Maria Josepha de Saxony dubbed, like her son Louis XV, Dauphine de France, was at the château for a few days, and since then it has adopted her title.

The vineyards for Château de La Dauphine cover a total area of 40 hectares, and the vines have an average age of 35 years and are planted in clay and sandy soils. They are harvested manually so that an initial selection of bunches can be made while still in the field, and to respect the grape as much as possible so that it arrives in the winery with as few breakages or crushings as possible.

Once in the winery, the Château de La Dauphine harvest is vatted by gravity into stainless steel and cement tanks. In them it ferments at a maximum controlled temperature of 26ºC for about 20 days, but the total vatting time is 30 days. It is then un-vatted and pressed with a vertical press, and the wines are separated according to their qualities. The wine then goes on to perform malolactic fermentation in barrels. Lastly the wine is aged for 12 months in barrels, 30% of which are renewed annually.

Château de La Dauphine is a harmonious wine that is generous, elegant and complex, with slightly toasted touches and rich in aromas of red and black fruit.

2022

Merlot takes center stage in Château de La Dauphine 2022, an aromatic and spicy red wine with a very pleasant texture. The nose is abundant with aromas typical of aging, such as spices, dark berries, and licorice. On the palate, it is juicy and chalky, fresh and fruity, with hints of chalk. In short: a very bold yet refined character.

2015 On the nose Château de La Dauphine 2015 evokes memories of stewed plums, blackberries, fruit cake and earthy charcoal touches. On the palate it has a medium body, and is rich, voluminous and somewhat spicy. Its finish is lingering and slightly bitter.
