About Château Haut-Marbuzet

Although the origins of this winery date back to the 18th century, the story of Château Haut-Marbuzet begins in 1952 when a man, Hervé Duboscq, of humble origin, made lots of money as a wine merchant and acquired a few hectares in the village of Saint-Estèphe in the Haut-Médoc belonging to the McCarthy family. Taking advantage of the fact that this was a time when vineyards were selling at a very reasonable price, Hervé set about buying up all of McCarthy’s other plots, gradually building up a 76-hectare estate. Hidden between the prestigious Cos d'Estournel and Montrose wineries, the value of this unique terroir was initially not well recognised, but thanks to the dedication of the Duboscq family, in 1978 it achieved Grand Bourgeois Exceptionnel status and since 2003 it has been officially listed as one of the 9 Crus Bourgeois Exceptionnels. Now it is his son Henri Duboscq who owns the chateau and makes the wines along with his two sons Hugues and Bruno to ensure the winery lives on.

Overlooking the Gironde estuary, Château Haut-Marbuzet is located mainly between the top of the Marbuzet hill and the Long Treytin plateau. This is the birthplace of its wine of the same name. A blend with an unusually high proportion of Merlot, accompanied by Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. These are vines averaging 30 years of age planted in gravel, clay and limestone soils and cultivated in the traditional way. The grapes are harvested by hand and vinification in the winery is carried out in wooden and concrete vats. Finally, the wine ages for 18 months in new French oak barrels.

Thanks to this long aging, Château Haut-Marbuzet is an opulent, expressive and elegant red wine. A wine that stands out among the characteristic austere style of Saint-Estèphe wines and, as described by Robert Parker himself, is “one of the most sensual wines of Bordeaux”.

2023

Château Haut-Marbuzet 2023 unfurls its charm immediately with an aromatic profile of dark fruits such as blackberries and currants, interwoven with hints of cherry. Nuances of tobacco and violets are also discernible, without allowing the oak to overpower the ensemble. On the palate, it introduces itself with a plush and opulent texture, offering a seductive depth and a consistent flow of ripe fruit flavors. The tannins are sweet and well-integrated, bestowing upon it a harmonious and lingering finish.
