About Château L'If

There exist realms where icons seem inevitable. Music, cinema, painting... domains where certain figures inevitably occupy that symbolic space we all recognise, even if we cannot always articulate why.

And in the world of wine, it is precisely the same. Sometimes they are the names of wineries. Sometimes families. Sometimes projects that have silently redefined our understanding of excellence. One such example is the universe surrounding Jacques Thienpont.

Domaine Jacques Thienpont is a viticultural group based in Bordeaux that requires little introduction within the realm of high-end wines. Founded and led by the Belgian oenologist Jacques Thienpont, his name has become synonymous with precision, sensitivity, and a very clear vision of what it means to produce wine seriously.

Within his universe, there are names that function almost as cult pieces. One of them is Château Le Pin, in Pomerol. A wine that has become one of the great contemporary icons of Bordeaux, with its name Le Pin deriving its identity from the solitary pine tree in the Pomerol vineyard.

The other is Château L’If, also on the right bank. A more recent endeavour, yet with the same underlying philosophy. L’If—which translates to "yew"—continues this play of natural, almost symbolic references, where trees are not merely part of the landscape but are integral to identity.

The vineyard of L’If, in Saint-Émilion, consists of 14 distinct plots where biodiversity is encouraged, including the introduction of varied plant cover. The aim is not to intervene more, but to intervene better. The result is a more balanced, vibrant vineyard with a greater capacity for expression.

In the winery, the approach follows the same philosophy. Fermentation is conducted in conical stainless steel tanks with temperature control, seeking precision in each extraction. Malolactic fermentation occurs 50% in new French oak barrels. Subsequently, the wine matures for 12 to 16 months in barrels.

Château L’If is a wine that has already earned its rightful place on the map of great contemporary Saint-Émilion wines. Because ultimately, in wine, what truly matters is not just to stand out, but to become a benchmark, a unique language, an icon.
