About Château Léoville Barton

At the time of the English domination, wines were shipped to this country on a large scale through Bordeaux. It was the leading wine trading port and in England an exclusive market developed, which only the wealthy had access to. It was so successful that British wine merchants began to establish trading houses in Bordeaux itself. But these négociants (trading houses) were not only dedicated to buying and selling, they were also in charge of storing and aging in the chais (cellars) of Bordeaux for later distribution in barrels and bottles. That is why the members of these houses used to be much more prepared than the producers themselves. Anthony Barton, the sixth generation of a family of Irish descent, founded his négociant company in 1722 and in less than 20 years became one of the most influential figures in the wine trade. 300 years later, the Barton family’s passion for wine is reflected in the elegance and consistency of Château Léoville Barton, a winery with an exceptional heritage that, unlike many others in the region, does not have a château. In fact, the château that appears on its wine labels belongs to Château Langoa-Barton, who they share the property with.

With 45 hectares of vineyards, its wine of the same name, Château Léoville Barton Saint-Julien, reflects the exceptional vineyard that the Barton family has preserved for 10 generations. A red wine made from Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot varieties from vines averaging 30 years of age, planted on one of the most beautiful gravel and clay ridges of the Garonne, in the heart of the Saint Julien denomination in the Médoc. The vines are cultivated using environmentally friendly agriculture and, once the grapes reach optimum ripeness, they are harvested manually. In the winery, the destemmed grapes are carefully selected, crushed and poured into thermo-regulated wooden vats, separating them by the plot they came from. Fermentation is carried out at a controlled temperature for 7-10 days and maceration takes approximately 3 weeks. The wine is then aged in French oak barrels, 60% of which are new, for 16 to 18 months before bottling.

Coming from a second Grand Cru Classé, one of the five exclusive crus in the Saint-Julien denomination, Château Léoville Barton Saint-Julien is an elegant, fresh and powerful wine that will catch people’s attention. One of the most sought-after wines, made mainly to please. The more time passes, the more praise it receives from international critics.
