About Château Léoville Poyferré

Eighteen months is a long time. A lot can happen in a year and a half: the pregnancy of a killer whale, babies learning to talk... And there is even time to fall in and out of love up to six times! (according to studies, falling in love only lasts three months). And because everyone is thankfully free to use their time as they wish, there are some who decide to use it winemaking. This is true at Château Léoville Poyferré where this same amount of time is crucial in the aging of their wines.

Under the motto “what is essential is invisible to the eye” (borrowed from The Little Prince by Saint-Exupéry) this French winery, a hundred years old and one of the oldest, currently produces one of the most renowned wines of the A.O.C. Saint-Julien. Today, the company is run by the Cuvelier family, the most recent winemaking family from northern France to take on this historic estate. Its history dates back to the 18th century with Alexandre de Gasca, Lord of Léoville, who divided his vineyards (one of the largest in the Médoc) among his three heirs. One of them had emigrated, so his share ended up in the hands of the State. After several sales, this first part was finally acquired by the Barton family. The remaining land was divided between the elder brother Emmanuel de Las Cases (who would later found Léoville Las Cases) and his sister Jeanne de Las Casses (who left her share to her daughter, also named Jeanne, married to Baron Poyferre). And that is where the name comes from. After passing through the ownership of Lalande and Erlanger (two wine merchant bankers), Château Léoville Poyferré was acquired by the Cuvelier family in 1920.

These three properties, once united under the same ownership, are undoubtedly the glory of the A.O.C. Saint-Julien. However, each of them maintains its own character. All of them share the area’s characteristic gravel soil. Even so, Château Léoville Poyferré stands out for its unique and distinctive style, which makes it worthy of Second Crû status in the 1855 Classification of Bordeaux Wines

In total, Château Léoville Poyferré currently owns about 80 hectares. The entire vineyard was replanted and reduced by half in 1979 by Didier Cuvelier, who set out to modernise all the facilities. Initially it started with the vineyard, but these reforms continued in the winery and in the facilities, and a new winery was built. The work was completed in 1993 and since then Château Léoville Poyferré has been unstoppable. An exhaustive cultivation, with complete respect for the environment and using on manual labour, is followed by a harvest (also manual) and extensive work in the winery. Here the grapes are selected twice and always worked separately, respecting each of the Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc plots that grow on this estate. The grape pulp is processed and vatted in the 57 stainless steel tanks where pre-fermentation maceration (which lasts one week) and the most important step: fermentation will take place. Here, to ensure it is made well, Château Léoville Poyferré adds non-saccharomyces yeasts to the must, eliminating the use of SO2. Finally, Château Léoville Poyferré is pressed to produce wine that then spends some time in French oak barrels. After this, the moment of magic happens, where the different varieties and cuvées are blended to give soul and shape to every Château Léoville Poyferré vintage.

Château Léoville Poyferré is possibly one of the most character filled wineries in the A.O.C. Saint-Julien. Character is not a gift. And it doesn’t go to waste either. They transform it into this wonderful red wine, one of the best and most representative of the Médoc
