About Château Lespault-Martillac

The wines of the A.O.C. Pessac-Léognan have always been considered the best in the world; especially their red wines, with an elegant, wonderful, sophisticated touch which makes them unique and unforgettable. From here, in this area surrounding the city of Bordeaux (in the southwest of France), the concept of Grand Bordeaux Red arose, and not only that: some centuries earlier, in the year 1300, Archbishop Bertrand de Got (later known as Pope Clement V of Avignon) was already planting what is now known as Château Pape Clément.

It’s not known whether it’s because of its pine forests (which the vineyards creep among), its deep gravel soil (with some clay components) or its altitude (at one of the highest points in Martillac), but what is undeniable is the authenticity of this special place, and by extension all the wineries that are located in this area, such as Château Lespault-Martillac.

Château Lespault-Martillac is under the supervision of Olivier Bernard (also owner of Domaine Chevalier), who fell for the charms of this estate owned by the Bolleau family. Bernard took charge of these 8 hectares, located on a gravel hilltop overlooking the town of Martillac, in order to polish this jewel by applying the same principles and the same ethics as at Domaine de Chevalier: biodynamics, constant observation of the vineyard and a deep respect for the terroir and the environment.

At Château Lespault-Martillac the vineyard block is divided into different parcels where Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot, Malbec, Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon are grown. Chemicals and fertilizers are totally forbidden there, achieving the purest expression of the terroir. This is achieved by relying on organic methods to combat insects and pests. Obviously, this entails constant monitoring of the vines, which is intensified from June onwards, with tests every two weeks. The soil is also mechanically weeded, plowed and enriched with organic compost (to guarantee the life and richness of the soil). In this way, each plot receives specialized attention, and the management of each plot is organized according to its climate and soil variations.

Once the right moment arrives, harvesting begins, which is done manually in several passes in order to collect only the healthiest bunches. As they say in this winery, "a great wine is always made with great grapes". In this task, the grape harvesting teams will use small crates to deposit the bunches of grapes. This is how they arrive at the winery, trying to guarantee at all times the good condition of the raw material to produce Château Lespault-Martillac.

The contents of these boxes are emptied on a sorting table and checked one by one to eliminate those which don’t meet minimum quality standards. From here, the next step will be to take all the grapes to the destemmer, where they will go to a second sorting table where twelve people are waiting to remove the stalks and debris. After this, Château Lespault-Martillac is transferred by gravity to the 60-80 hectoliter tanks, where it will undergo fermentation. Each plot will do this separately, maintaining a constant temperature throughout the process, without abrupt changes. Fundamental in this process will be the pumping-over and treating, carried out manually, and where the role of Louis de Bouglon, winemaker and cellar master who will know what to give each tank at each moment, will also be more than necessary.

From here, Château Lespault-Martillac will be aged on the lees in barrels for the first 5 months. After racking and blending, the wine will continue to rest for a further 10 months in barrels. After a light fining, Château Lespault-Martillac is bottled in a bottle based on an 18th century model: a jewel polished by time.

2022

Château Lespault-Martillac 2022 is pure concentration. This red wine, with a creamy and velvety texture, surprises primarily with its aromas, featuring oak, spices, dark berries, and licorice. On the palate, it is smooth and enveloping, with a dense body and plenty of flavor. Long finish. Pure delight!
