About Château Phélan Ségur

One of the most controversial issues in the history of wine selling, and especially for Bordeaux wines, is the famous Bordeaux Classification of 1855 drawn up at the request of Napoleon III for the International Exhibition in Paris. A total of 61 estates were rated Premier Cru a Quinto, becoming a guarantee of quality that has remained to this day. Unfortunately, however, some other wineries with equally exquisite terroirs were left out of this ranking. One example of an estate that should have been included in the 1855 Classification is undoubtedly Château Phélan Ségur. A property that is part of the legends of the Médoc, on the left bank of Bordeaux and true to the saying that “the great terroirs overlook the water”, it is located in a prestigious district of Saint-Estèphe. Founded by the Irishman Bernard Phelan and expanded by his son Frank Phelan, mayor of Saint-Estèphe for 30 years, Château Phélan Ségur has established itself as a Domaine that exudes elegance, subtlety and harmony. It is currently owned by Belgian businessman Philippe Van de Vyvere, a great wine lover, who saw one of his most hoped-for dreams come true when he acquired the domaine.

The winery’s first wine, Château Phélan Ségur is made from Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc vineyards located on a magnificent clay gravel hill overlooking the Gironde estuary. Belonging to the prestigious AOC Saint-Estèphe, this Grand Cru Classé of 70 hectares is known for being exceptional. The vines are cultivated using environmentally-friendly agriculture and each variety is harvested manually when the grapes reach optimum ripeness. In the winery, the grapes are meticulously selected and destemmed. Fermentation takes place at a controlled temperature in stainless steel tanks and then the wine is aged for 18 months in 225L French oak barrels, 50% of which are new.

Without a doubt, Château Phélan Ségur is a great Médoc wine with a classic style. A powerful coupage with an overflowing personality that promises to develop well in the bottle over the years.

2017

Château Phélan Ségur 2017 is a concentrated red wine with a seductive aromatic palette of black fruits, toasty notes and violet flowers and hints of graphite. On the palate it is sweet, lively and elegant. A medium-bodied wine full of personality with vibrant acidity and fine tannins. The finish is long with a pleasant salinity.
