About Château Valandraud

The wines of Burdeos enjoy a prominent position in the international market and are esteemed and cherished globally. Over the years, producers in the region have upheld exceptionally high standards of quality. Thanks to a diverse and unique terroir, encompassing a variety of soils, microclimates, and aspects, the classic Bordeaux blend combines traditional grape varieties, resulting in complex and well-balanced wines that stand as the hallmark of Burdeos. Following these standards, Jean-Luc Thunevin and Murielle Andraud initiated their own venture on a small plot of 0.6 hectares nestled in a quaint valley near Saint Emilion. A Château named Valandraud, a portmanteau of 'Val' for valley and 'Andraud' after Murielle's surname, whose wines aspire to join the ranks of the greats.

Their flagship, Château Valandraud, is a classic blend of merlot, cabernet sauvignon, and cabernet franc from the renowned limestone plateau benefiting from a temperate maritime climate with moderate temperature fluctuations. Grapes are cultivated following ecological principles and are hand-harvested. In the winery, the selected, destemmed, and crushed grapes ferment in stainless steel tanks at controlled temperatures, followed by 24 months of maturation in oak barrels. The wine is then bottled unclarified and unfiltered.

Elevated to the status of 1er Grand Cru Classé since 2012, their eponymous wine Château Valandraud presents a powerful interpretation of the classic Bordeaux blend. A cellar-worthy wine that, over time, aspires to transcend and establish itself as a legend among the great reds of Saint-Émilion.

2023

Château Valandraud 2023 unveils itself in a deep, almost hypnotic cherry-red hue. As one draws closer, a bouquet of intense blackberry and blueberry aromas unfurls, subtly enhanced by a whisper of high-caliber oak which adds a layer of complexity. On the palate, this red wine exhibits a remarkable firmness, with ripe, robust flavors and a concentrated tannic structure that underpins the ensemble. It is a wine of considerable power and contemporary style, yet it retains the harmony and length that epitomize the classics.
