About Cinco Leguas Rompecepas Garnacha

There was a time when Madrid did not source its wine from just anywhere. During the Early Modern Period, a royal decree established that the wines supplied to the Villa de Madrid, sold through the capital's tavern keepers, had to come from within a five-league radius. This regulation, overseen by the Sala de Alcaldes de Casa y Corte, ensured that the people of Madrid received a nearby, fresh, and exclusive supply. This measure, which for centuries shaped the wine trade, now inspires a project that looks to the past to reinvent the present: Bodegas Cinco Leguas.

Its creator is Marc Isart, one of the region's most innovative and acclaimed winemakers, with experience in cult projects such as Comando G and Bernabeleva. In Chinchón, to the southeast of Madrid, he decided to bring his personal dream to life: crafting what he calls "thirst-quenching wines." Pleasurable, authentic wines that are easy to drink but never trivial. Wines that speak of the landscape, the esparto grass, the rugged and luminous land surrounding the capital.

From this philosophy emerges Cinco Leguas Rompecepas Garnacha. The grapes are harvested by hand, with care and at the precise point of ripeness. They are then destemmed and fermented in concrete tanks for 20 days, achieving a gentle extraction that preserves all the fruit's freshness. The ageing process is equally divided: half of the wine rests in 1,000-litre clay jars, which impart texture and vivacity; the other half matures in used 500-litre French oak barrels, adding complexity and finesse without overshadowing the garnacha.

Cinco Leguas Rompecepas Garnacha is a balanced, vibrant red wine with character, respecting its origins and paying homage to the winemaking history of Madrid. A wine that bridges centuries of tradition with the fresh perspective of a winemaker who knows that the highest praise for a wine is simply to ask for another glass.
