Alma de Contador 2021 captivates you from the outset with its mature and spicy character. As you approach the glass, notes of stewed fruits such as plums and blackberries are released, accompanied by a hint of dark spices like clove and pepper. On the palate, it is a revelation of power and depth; abundant tannins caress the palate while subtle nuances of smokiness and toast unfold. Its structure is robust, allowing everything to remain in delightful harmony.

About Alma de Contador

Luis Gutiérrez says that if he could only buy one of the wines made by Benjamín Romeo, it would definitely be this one. At least this is what the famous critic said in his Parker review, where Alma de Contador has been awarded 97 points (and with good reason). In terms of ability to win someone over, Alma de Contador is in a league of its own; and not just for Gutierrez. Alma de Contador has also managed to find its way into La Place de Bordeaux (a privilege that very few Spanish wineries have been granted).

And when things are done well, with honesty and sincerity, they are bound to succeed. This has turned out to be true for a red wine made by Benjamín Romeo who wanted to kill two birds with one stone: pay homage to his daughter by making a red wine with her name and capture all the potential and essence of his town, San Vicente de la Sonsierra (in La Rioja Alta), where Benjamín began making wines in his garage in 1995. With this in mind, there is no doubt that there was no better name for this red where Benjamín has gone all out, selecting grapes from his three best vineyards: the Andrés vineyard (planted 45 years ago by his father), El Bombón (with century old vines) and Diasol (at the foot of Mount Toloño, facing north, and much cooler than the other two). All these plots, planted at high, medium and low altitudes, grow in La Rioja Alta, the westernmost area of the denomination, where a wide range of soils abound: from clayey, calcareous and ferrous soils to alluvial soils. All of them are very poor in organic matter and very permeable, easily retaining the 400 l/m2 of rainfall that is typical of the Atlantic climate.

In Benjamín’s own words, Alma de Contador is a red wine that has been made with freedom, that he really identifies with, and that is made with the utmost care and quality in each of the production phases. Tempranillo and Grenache could not have been better treated! Alma de Contador is a very limited production wine. You know what they say: good things come in small packages and there are only a few bottles of the best wines.

Alma de Contador 2020 is a juicy red wine that is reminiscent of Benjamín Romeo’s beginnings. Perfumed and floral, this is an attractive, powerful and very elegant red wine. Balsamic aromas and aromatic herbs appear on the nose. The oak appears very quickly, but then evolves until it disappears and becomes incense and sandalwood. This is followed by aromas of blueberries, lavender and iodine. The palate is very fine, with polished tannins. Fresh acidity. A young but very drinkable wine. Long, dense and tight. With great potential.
