About Château Couhins-Lurton Blanc

The Pessac-Léognan AOC, just outside the city of Bordeaux, is where the concept of fine Bordeaux red wines arose at the end of the 17th century. This area, located on the left bank where sand and gravel soils are abundant, has always been home to the best red wine vineyards. But who ever said that the land of fine red wines couldn’t also produce fine whites capable of threatening the continued existence of this title?

Paradoxical as it may seem, this is the case at Château Couhins-Lurton, where one of the most famous white wines in the area is produced. Château Couhins-Lurton Blanc was made by André Lurton, owner of the estate, a key figure in the area (founder of the local winegrowers' organisation and creator of the Pessac-Léognan AOC) and a major driving force in Bordeaux. Today, the property is still in the hands of this family, which continues to bless the world with this special wine. Specifically, Château Couhins-Lurton currently owns no less than 5.5 hectares of white vineyards, planted mainly with the sauvignon blanc variety. These grapes grow on a terrace at between 20 and 25 metres above sea level, where gravel, clay and limestone soils are mixed. In this composition, each of these soils has a function: while the gravels are in charge of draining rainwater (preventing stagnation), the clay acts as a sponge (retaining the necessary moisture), helped by the lime (thanks to which it maintains that touch of acidity).

These unique and special nuances are respected at all times, with a commitment to environmentally-friendly winemaking and minimal intervention. Thus, after the harvest (which is done by hand), Château Couhins-Lurton Blanc is sorted, pressed and left to rest in oak barrels before fermentation begins. Château Couhins-Lurton Blanc is aged in these wooden containers in contact with its lees for almost a year. Undoubtedly one of the reasons why Pessac-Léognan AOC can pat itself on the back!
