About D'Arenberg The Footbolt Syrah

Although it might seem like wine has nothing to do with horse racing, Joseph Osborn was a brave man one who decided to move from one world to the other. In 1912, this successful racehorse owner made the difficult decision to sell his horses to buy the d'Arenberg estate and set up his own winemaking project. This was a very successful move because it has now become one of the most important wineries in the McLaren Vale, South Australia. D'Arenberg The Footbolt Syrah is made in honour of Footbolt, his most prized horse and it has now become one of the most popular wines for the region's Syrah fans.

D'Arenberg The Footbolt Syrah is made from Syrah grapes from the estate. These are certified organic vines that make use of solar energy, sheep grazing and disease control using natural treatments. The grapes are harvested in small batches and stay separate until the final blend. The must is fermented in a variety of new and used French oak barrels. The wine then ages on the lees and there is no racking until the final blending. Finally, it is bottled without clarifying or filtering.

Now run by the fourth generation, Osborn D'Arenberg The Footbolt Syrah is a winning wine. An undoubtedly original way to connect the world of horses with the world of wine, and it has gone well.

2018

D'Arenberg The Footbolt Syrah 2018 is a concentrated red wine with aromas of red and black fruits, herbal notes and hints of wet earth. On the palate it is smooth, velvety and flavoursome. A medium-bodied wine with firm tannins and integrated acidity. The ending is a bit wild and rustic.
