About Gran Enemigo Agrelo

They call him “the Messi of wine”. Alejandro Vigil is a versatile winemaker who achieved a record for Argentine wine: being awarded 100 Parker points twice for the first time, in 2018, with two wines signed by him. One of them is made at the renowned Catena Zapata winery, where he is the winemaking director, and the other is a red wine from his personal project, “El Enemigo”, an extraordinary winery he runs together with Adrianna Catena (Bodega Aleanna) in Mendoza, Argentina.

This is also the birthplace of Gran Enemigo Agrelo, a coupage made with a majority of Cabernet Franc grapes accompanied by some Malbec, grown in a vineyard with predominantly clay soils, lying at 930 metres above sea level in the town of Agrelo (Mendoza, Argentina), where the spectacular views of the Andes Mountains would leave anyone speechless.

To make Gran Enemigo Agrelo, 5 different harvests are carried out, with a period of a month and a half between the first and the last one. The grapes are cold macerated for 5 days. The average maceration period is 23 days with 30% of the bunches whole. It is fermented in barrels at a controlled medium temperature (22°C/72°F). The resulting wine is aged for 15 months in 100-year-old foudres.

Gran Enemigo Agrelo is a wine with round, mellow and long tannins. A great Cabernet Franc, with the Argentine touch provided by the qualities of the Malbec variety, and bearing the signature of the most revolutionary and creative winemaker of recent times in this South American country.
