About Gomariz X Albariño

Gomariz X Albariño is a white wine crafted by the winery Coto de Gomariz in Leiro (Ourense), within the D.O. Ribeiro region.

Coto de Gomariz is the oldest registered wine estate on the peninsula. It is located in the Gomariz Valley, where wines have been produced since the 10th century. For centuries, it belonged to various ecclesiastical orders until the mid-19th century, when, through the Madoz disentailment, it passed into private hands, being divided among different wineries and small winegrowers.

One of these private proprietors is the Carreiro family. In the 1970s, Ricardo Carreiro Ameijeiras began to revive native grape varieties, and in 1980, they bottled their first wines. Since 2001, Xose Lois Sebio, the technical director and oenologist, has been cultivating the vineyards organically and biodynamically. Currently, the 24 hectares they own in Gomariz are almost entirely managed through natural viticulture (following Fukuoka's principles). This approach to vineyard management, along with the diverse soils (granite sands, clay, and schist) and a unique microclimate, provides the ideal conditions to produce authentic wines that reflect the character of the region where they originate.

Gomariz X Albariño is a wine made from Albariño and a touch of Treixadura from a single vineyard, As Penelas, located in the Gomariz Valley. It is a 1-hectare vineyard planted on 14 terraces atop schist soils.

The harvest of Gomariz X Albariño is conducted manually in 18-kilogram boxes with grape selection both in the vineyard and at the winery. Following a gentle pressing, the must is selected, and after static settling, fermentation begins at a low temperature with native yeasts, finishing with commercial yeasts. It rests for several months in stainless steel tanks.

Gomariz X Albariño 2023 enlivens the senses with its fresh and vibrant aromas. Visually, its brilliant yellow hue is incredibly alluring. On the nose, it invites one to relish a marvellous array of fruits: sweet melon, juicy pears, mandarins, and a refreshing hint of lemon. Underneath, subtle mineral notes add depth. On the palate, it surprises with a delicate burst of citrus and a mineral touch, complemented by an acidity that imparts liveliness and a slight spicy note that entices repeated sips. It is a highly recommended wine for its aromatic freshness and its balance between fruit and minerality, making it irresistible and effortlessly enjoyable.

Gomariz X 2020 is an aromatic, nervy and refreshing wine. Ripe white fruit with prevailing citrus notes that give it a lot of freshness. In the mouth it is easy to drink and direct. Its final mineral touch gives it very long finish.
