About Jose Gil Camino de Ribas Parcela La Cóncova

There is a distinct difference between starting from scratch and continuing a legacy. However, both beginnings come with their own challenges. While the former must move heaven and earth to acquire vineyards, a task that in some regions borders on the impossible, those who already possess plots face the challenge of generational transition. In the case of Rioja, this challenge is significant, as it is a region where families have worked, generation after generation, with the same tradition to build the international reputation that their wines enjoy today.

It is within this context that the story of José Gil unfolds, a third-generation winemaker from San Vicente de la Sonsierra, a picturesque village of barely 1,000 inhabitants in La Rioja. José, as the son of viticulturists, followed the expected path: he studied oenology and joined the family winery to produce the classic carbonic maceration red wine. Yet his heart led him in a new direction. He decided to create his own wines, drawing inspiration from the Burgundian style and ancient practices, with the aim of capturing the purest expression of his land's terroir in each bottle.

Thus, alongside his partner Vicky, José began cultivating a small estate of 8 hectares of vineyard in the Sonsierra of Rioja, launching wines that have captivated the wine community and proven that a new Rioja, eager to present itself to the world, has arrived to stay.

With his innovative approach, José is ushering Rioja into a new era, one that respects tradition but embraces a fresh, open, and ambitious perspective. José Gil Camino de Ribas Parcela La Cóncova is testament to this. A wine originating from a unique vineyard with sandy soil and sandstone, La Cóncova, located in San Vicente de la Sonsierra at an altitude of 600 metres. It is a blend of tempranillo, garnacha, and a small percentage of varieties such as viura, jaén, garnacha blanca, palomino, and other white varieties, all cultivated organically and harvested manually in 250 kg crates. Once in the winery, vinification is carried out with 30% whole clusters and fermentation occurs with indigenous yeasts. Subsequently, the wine matures for 10 months in 500-litre French oak barrels.

The result is José Gil Camino de Ribas Parcela La Cóncova, a clear example of the new Rioja. A red wine deeply rooted in tradition, yet with a unique freshness and character that reflect the personal vision for the terroir of this new-generation winemaker.
