Red wine. 24 months in French oak barrels.

Joseph Phelps Insignia 2018 is a mature red. Deep garnet-purple in colour, this is a very tasty and refined wine. The nose is very powerful and intense with notes of blackcurrant, black plums, blackberries, dark chocolate, conifer and clove. On the palate it is silky, with volume. Very fine grain and fresh tannins. Black and crisp fruits. Long and spicy finish.

About Joseph Phelps Insignia

Robert Parker has said of this man that “he was one of the great visionaries of Napa Valley”. The wines made by Joseph Phelps are legendary, extraordinary in their quality and very important. These are wines you have to try at least once in your life. His wine collection is extensive and varied; but you should definitely start with Joseph Phelps Insignia.

Over the years this red wine has become the flagship of the house (and for good reason). A global icon. Joseph Phelps Insignia was born from the idea of making a base wine and that would be made from the best vintage each year. The first production, in 1974, featured Cabernet Sauvignon from the Stags Leap vineyard. This French variety, which is more typical of Bordeaux, was not expected to be the star of every vintage (in fact, in some years it even gave way to Merlot); however, year after year Cabernet Sauvignon proved it was worthy of its prime position. And so, without intending to, Joseph Phelps Insignia became a red coupage, always with a large proportion of Cabernet Sauvignon.

Joseph Phelps Insignia is made entirely from grapes grown on the winery’s nearly 200-acre estate outside of St. Helena, in Napa Valley (very close to the west coast of Sonoma). Here, Joseph Phelps owns different plots and vineyards that are masterfully blended in each of the Joseph Phelps Insignia vintages: St. Helena, Rutherford, Oakville, Stags Leap District, Oak Knoll District and South Napa Valley.
