About Oxer Kalamity Blanco

Oxer Bastegieta is a viticulturist and oenologist whose roots lie in the production of txakoli, the emblematic white wine of the Basque Country. Enchanted by Rioja Alavesa, he moved to Laguardia in search of old vineyards that would enable him to create unique and timeless wines.
 
Kalamity Blanco is predominantly made from the viura variety, along with a blend of different white varieties (calagraño, one of the oldest varieties in Rioja's winemaking history, torrontés, garnacha blanca, maturana blanca, and malvasía riojana). The wine undergoes whole-cluster pressing and fermentation with native yeasts. The resulting wine is aged for approximately 10 months in 600-litre French oak barrels.
 
Currently, Oxer Bastegieta is renowned for his artisanal approach and his passion for ancient vineyards. He employs regenerative agriculture and traditional techniques to craft wines that reflect the terroir and the identity of the indigenous varieties. His wines are often acclaimed for their complexity, elegance, and distinctive character.
 
Oxer Bastegieta also offers wines with striking labels that, like their contents, leave no one indifferent. The label of his Kalamity red and white wines, inspired by Mexican depictions of the dead—“because we all have a calamity inside,” according to Bastegieta himself—also features a quote: “Honi soit qui mal y pense” (Shame be to him who thinks evil of it), which comes from “The Kingdom of King Edward the Third”; a tribute expressing Oxer's admiration for the writer William Shakespeare.
 
Using another phrase from the renowned English author, we can say: "The wine cup is the little silver well, Where truth, if truth there be, doth dwell." Indeed, Oxer Bastegieta's wines are sincere and straightforward, full of authenticity and elegance, filled with surprise and truth. These very limited productions offer a bold face of Rioja that is well worth discovering.
