About Costers del Siurana Kyrie
At first no one believed in them. It was in the late 1970s when the couple Pastrana & Jarque joined forces with René Barbier to produce great wines. The area they chose was El Priorat, a region in southern Catalonia (between the coastal and pre-coastal mountain ranges) where unique characteristics all join together: slate soils (which provide unique qualities to the wines) and a microclimate influenced by the Montsant mountain range (1,166 metres above sea level), which acts as a natural barrier, providing shelter from the bad weather coming from the north. They were sure that only great wines could come from there, but just saying that wasn’t enough. Neither the banks nor the government agencies supported this idea. They needed proof. As we all known: a picture (in this case a bottle) is worth a thousand words. Despite having little money and little winemaking knowledge, they worked hard. In 1993, the World Wine Guide named their Clos de l'Obac wine as one of the 150 best wines in the world.
Their story didn’t end here and half a century later the Costers del Siurana winery has expanded their range with wines like Kyrie, a white wine from the D.O.Q. Priorat which originates at the lower end of Mas d'en Bruno. The vineyard, with the same name and vines with an average age of 25 years, is south-facing and its core is made up of native Catalan varieties (Garnacha Blanca, Macabeo, Xarel•lo and Muscat of Alexandria). At Costers del Siurana all vintages are made by blending, always respecting the same varieties and percentages. This ensures that the only nuances that come out are those of the slate soil and the temperate climate with low rainfall (depending on the year). These factors will vary each season, making it very challenging to produce a wine that reflects the identity of the seasons.
After fermentation, the wine is left to settle in the fermentation tanks where it is naturally cold-stabilised. After this, Kyrie is racked (always by gravity and without machines) into new French oak barrels from Limousin, Allier and Nervers. During this time, the wine will be continuously decanted through manual racking, where the sediments deposited are left on the bottom. Finally, Kyrie is clarified with egg white.
As Francis of Assisi said. “Start by doing what is necessary, then what is possible, and by the time you realise it, you will be doing the impossible.” This is the only way to reach a successful conclusion and achieve things that were unthinkable until now.

Its understated maturity is revealed in a velvety texture that beckons a second taste. |

| 2021 | Costers del Siurana Kyrie 2021 is a traditional, deep and mineral white. The experience begins with a golden colour, it is very intense, and continues with a complex nose, where white fruit, stone fruit and spices appear on a mineral and balsamic background. On the palate it is creamy and well balanced with silky tannins. Long and mineral finish. |
