About Léon Beyer Gewürztraminer

In 1935, an initial decree already placed it on the map of French Appellation d'Origine Contrôlée (A.O.C.). However, an understanding with the Institut National des Appellations d'Origine (INAO) was not possible due to Germany annexing its territory during World War II. Since Roman times, Alsace has been a region of exceptional wines. The French were not going to lose it so easily. At the end of the war, in 1945, the Association of Alsace Oenologists succeeded in having this designation recognised, and finally, in 1962, the A.O.C. Alsace was officially named.

Located in the northwest of France, bordering Germany, this region sheltered by the Vosges enjoys a dry climate —with abundant sunshine and cool nights— in a terroir composed of more than 800 distinct soils, where granite, schist, sandstone, limestone, marl, clay, and volcanic soil stand out. Here, under these conditions, extraordinary and unique wines are born, such as Léon Beyer Gewürztraminer.

Léon Beyer Gewürztraminer is a single-varietal white wine made from gewürztraminer, a highly aromatic variety that produces high alcohol content. This wine, which originates from the small vineyards of Eguisheim (a village in the Haut-Rhin), is crafted by Léon Beyer, one of the legendary winemakers of the region. After meticulous field control, where the grapes are hand-harvested, Léon Beyer Gewürztraminer is made from different batches that ferment separately —in barrels or glass tanks— depending on their sanitary condition, origin, and sugar concentration. Finally, Léon Beyer Gewürztraminer is naturally clarified after the racking processes: one before winter (right after fermentation) and another in spring.
