About Luis Cañas Crianza

Luis Cañas Crianza is a red wine from D.O. La Rioja produced by Bodegas Luis Cañas in Villabuena, álava. In 1970, this producer started to bottle and market their wines when many others still sold wines in bulk. In 1994, they opened a new winery with the most modern production systems.

They own 350 hectares, mainly planted on clayey-calcareous soils, distributed in 870 plots located in La Rioja Alavesa, an area with an excellent wine tradition. They use a rational viticulture that does not use any herbicides or synthetic fertilisers.

The climate of Rioja Alavesa is a transition between the Atlantic and the Mediterranean climate. The Sierra de Cantabria mountain range protects form the winds and storm from the north, creating a dry climate with large temperature variations that make it perfect for the cultivation of vines and their optimal ripening.

This wine is made with Tempranillo (95%) and a small amount of Grenache (5%), which gives it a more fruity character. The grapes used to make Luis Cañas Crianza come from vineyards with an average age of 30 years. After the grapes are harvested, they ferment at a controlled temperature of 26ºC for 20 days.

Luis Cañas Crianza ages for 12 months in French oak barrels (70%) and American oak barrels (30%).Then, it rests in the bottle for another 9 months.

A wine that perfectly complements its fruity character with the barrel ageing, leaving a silky tannin in the mouth.

2012 Fresh and tasty. Powerful, with balsamic and mature tannins. Good persistence.

Cherry red with a garnet border.

Medium intensity and fruity aromas. Vegetal notes and balsamic and toasted touches. Smoky shades on a background of sweet oak.
2011 A flavourful and tantalising but fresh and light wine. Displays some well integrated balsamic notes and lightly dried tannins. The fruit that was picked up on the nose later recedes into the background. A very persistent wine.

Well covered ruby colour.

Medium intensity aroma with dominant vegetable notes. Abundant red fruit nuances are accompanied by balsamic and toasted aromas, with some smoked hints. A tantalising bottom.
2010 A very tasty and mellow wine, but light and fresh at the same time. It shows some balsamic nuances and slightly drying but well-integrated tannins. The notes of fruit noticed in the nose, are now only felt in the background. Good persistence.

High intensity red ruby colour.

Medium-intensity aromas with dominant vegetal notes and abundant red fruit released along with some balsamic and toasted aromas and a light smoked nuance. Mellow background.
2009 It is soft at the attack. Its mid palate is velvety, silky and has a good structure. It shows red fruit compensated with a great acidity and very pleasant noble sweet tannins. Medium finish with a good persistence which leaves balsamic aromas at retro-olfaction. A very pleasant and easy-drinking Spanish wine with a great value (and pleasure) for money.

Clean and bright ruby red colour. It shows very thin, uniform and slow-falling tears.

Clean, medium-high nasal aromas with expressive aromas of fruit which are released along with spicy, mineral, roasted and undergrowth notes. Some balsamic notes are noticed in the background and freshens this nasal set plenty of nuances.
2008 Good attack. Tasty, velvety and smooth mid palate. Its notes of fruit and the creamy touch provided by the wood are well integrated. Spicy and balsamic aromas are also noticed. Balanced acidity. Lingering finish with balsamic nuances.

Intense cherry colour with purple reflections. Bright and with good tears.

Expressive and elegant aromas. THe notes of black and red fruit, milk, spices (vanilla) and toasted from the wood provide this wine with warmth. The balsamic notes provide the wine with a very nice touch of freshness.
2007 In the mouth it is tasty, smooth. Fruit and oak well cast, spicy, complex and structured. Nice end showing red fruits with balsamic memories. We suggest to drink it at 18 º C.
