About Masseria Setteporte Nerello Mascalese Etna Rosso

The grandeur of Mount Etna, one of Europe's most active and highest volcanoes located on the eastern coast of Sicily (Italy), can be appreciated in numerous ways. Its constant volcanic activity has shaped both the landscape and the culture of the region for millennia, serving as a source of fascination for geologists, travellers, and locals alike. A myriad of immersive experiences connects the island's nature, culture, and history. However, the region is particularly renowned for its vineyards, which thrive on volcanic soils. This unique terroir has produced wines of remarkable character and personality. Among them, Masseria Setteporte stands out, a winery situated on the southwestern slopes of Mount Etna, near Biancavilla. Founded by Ferdinando Portale, a notary who discovered his true passion in viticulture, this estate has been a pioneer in modernising cultivation techniques and has expertly harnessed the exceptional conditions of the volcanic soil and Mediterranean climate. Today, his son Piero Portale continues the family legacy, expanding the estate to 27 hectares and producing wines that reflect the mineral richness and uniqueness of Etna.

Among its most majestic wines, Masseria Setteporte Nerello Mascalese Etna Rosso is a single-varietal made from the indigenous nerello mascalese grape, sourced from vineyards located on terraces at an altitude between 650 and 800 metres. These old vines are planted on lava sand soils that efficiently drain the abundant rainfall in this part of Sicily. The cultivation is entirely organic, respecting the natural balance of the terroir, and the harvest is done manually at the optimal moment of ripeness. In the winery, the selected, destemmed, and crushed grapes undergo maceration and fermentation with native yeasts in stainless steel tanks. Afterwards, the wine ages in barrels for 12 months before being bottled and marketed.
