About Mazzei Poggio Badiola

Known as one of the most fascinating wine regions in the world, Tuscany is famous for its succulent gastronomy, its legendary culture and, of course, for the quality of its wines. Although the most widely planted grape is undoubtedly Sangiovese, the truth is that the arrival of foreign varieties, like Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon have brought in a new stage in winemaking that began in the 1980s with the birth of “super Tuscans”, wines made from a blend of native and foreign grapes and normally aged for at least one year in small barrels, following the Bordeaux style.

One of the wines recognised by its own winemakers as “O Supertuscan per tutti i giorni” (“the everyday Supertuscan” in Italian) is Mazzei Poggio Badiola, a wine that comes from vineyards located at high altitude (470 - 570 m) in the heart of the Chianti Classico region and combines the freshness and elegance of Sangiovese with the smooth structure of Merlot and the refinement of Petit Verdot. These vines are planted in rocky soils derived from limestone and decomposed sandstone. During vinification, the grapes ferment at a constant temperature of 26-28°C and macerate for 12-15 days. Finally, the wine is aged in small American oak barrels (225 litres) for 10 months before release.

With a focus on innovation, respect for the terroir and a strong commitment to excellence over six centuries, the Mazzei family presents this Mazzei Poggio Badiola, a super Tuscan to open and drink every day.
