About Meandro do Vale Meão

Meandro do Vale Meão is a barrel-aged red wine made by F. Olazabal & Filhos with the Touriga Nacional, Touriga franca, Tinta Roriz, Alicante Bouschet and Tinta Barroca varieties in the Portuguese DOC Douro denomination.

F. Olazabal & Filhos is one of the most prestigious wineries in Portugal. With 62 hectares of vineyards, owner Francisco Olazabal follows the traditional winemaking methods of his legendary great grandmother, D. Antónia Adelaide Ferreira . A key figure Portugal’s winemaking history who encouraged vineyard cultivation in the Douro region. Olazabal has learnt how to use her methods to get the most out of the different traditional Duero varieties.

Meandro do Vale Meão comes from vines located on the flatter land of the Meão Valley, on the Duero river. It has shale, granite and alluvium land and, because of the varied composition, each of the soils is worked in a particular way using conventional agriculture. The harvest is carried out at the optimum moment of ripeness.  

In the winery, each of the Meandro do Vale Meão grape varieties are vinified separately. First they are selected, destemmed and pressed. They then go through thermal shock and rest in granite lagares for 4 hours. The resulting must is transferred to temperature-regulated stainless steel tanks to begin fermentation. Finally, the wine ages in 225-litre, 2 and 3 year old Allier French oak barrels for 14 months.

Meandro do Vale Meão is a juicy, intense and very fruity wine that impresses both with its elegance and its balance. A fragrant, intensely red Duero.

2017 Meandro do Vale Meão 2017 is a smooth red wine with fragrant aromas of flowers, ripe red fruits, spices and aromatic herbs. On the palate it is intense, complex and fresh. With fruity and herbaceous flavours and a long and refreshing finish.
