About Mendall Espartal

Salvador Dalí, Quentin Tarantino, Lars von Trier, Jean-Michel Basquiat… All are heralded as "enfant terribles", their oeuvres have challenged the status quo and incited controversy within their respective fields. In the realm of viticulture, Laureano Serres Montagut epitomizes the "enfant terrible" of natural winemaking. A fervent vintner who staunchly advocates for the grape's authentic expression through artisanal and wholly natural processes. A true maverick who has set a precedent in Terra Alta, Catalonia. Spanning a total of 6 hectares of vineyards scattered across the municipality of Pinell de Brai, he presents a collection of pure and expressive wines under the moniker of his mother's house: Mendall.

One such offering, Mendall Espartal, is a red Grenache derived from 20-year-old vines rooted in loamy-clay soil with limestone at an elevation of 150 meters. Aiming to preserve the grape's pristine state, the vineyard is cultivated organically, eschewing any chemical products and adhering to biodynamic principles. Following a manual harvest, the destemmed grapes commence fermentation with their skins for one week using indigenous yeasts in stainless steel vats. Ultimately, the wine matures for 4 months in the same vats and an additional 3 months in terracotta amphorae.

With Mendall Espartal, Laureano Serres Montagut asserts himself as the "enfant terrible" of natural winemaking. A fluid, youthful, and expressive Grenache that defies conventional expectations and captivates the senses with its bold authenticity.
