Moric Blaufränkisch Burgenland is a single-variety red wine made from blaufränkisch, crafted by the Moric winery in Burgenland, Austria.

 

Roland Velich, who initiated the Moric project outside of his family winery (Velich), is the creator of this red wine Moric Blaufränkisch Burgenland, where he reaffirms his faith in the blaufränkisch grape, a variety that produces Austria's quintessential red wines, which can be powerful, elegant, and refined simultaneously.

 

Velich is acknowledged as one of the country's finest winemakers. For the production of Moric Blaufränkisch Burgenland, he utilises vineyards located in Neckenmarkt and Lutzmannsburg, which boast vines aged between eight and 50 years, planted in soils composed of limestone, primary rock, and marl.

 

The grape clusters undergo a skin maceration lasting approximately 20 days, conducted in open vats and steel tanks, with fermentation occurring through indigenous yeasts. The resulting wine is matured in barrels of varying sizes, ranging from 600 litres to 4500 litres in capacity. Finally, the wine is bottled without filtering or fining.

 

Moric Blaufränkisch Burgenland is undoubtedly a prime example of a fine Austrian red and serves as an ideal introduction to this quintessentially Austrian variety.

2017 Moric Blaufränkisch Burgenland 2017 is a red wine which on the nose offers aromas reminiscent of blackberries, cherries and black plums, accompanied by hints of dried rosemary and oregano.
