About Muriel Gran Reserva Viña Viejas

Rioja is one of Spain’s best known wine regions and is famous for its high quality wines, especially red wines made from the Tempranillo grape variety. There are many villages with a great wine heritage that has been preserved over time. The rich history and culture of past generations are kept alive today in towns like Elciego. A community rooted in its land and its winemaking tradition thanks to great small projects that have passed on their knowledge generation to generation. Bodegas Muriel was founded by the Murúa family, and it has stayed as it was in the hands of their descendants, Julián Murúa and his son, Javier Murúa.

This is clear to see in Muriel Gran Reserva Viña Viejas, a red wine made from old Tempranillo vines planted in clay-limestone soils that are poor in organic matter. The grapes are traditionally harvested by hand in small boxes. Once in the winery, the selected, destemmed and crushed grapes are fermented in stainless steel tanks for 20 days, with daily pumping over. The wine then ages for 24 months in new barrels, 75% of which are French oak and 25% are American.

Giving the greatest prominence to the DOCa Rioja’s star variety and following the traditional guidelines that have made it so well known, Muriel Gran Reserva Viña Viejas is a classic to enjoy the expertise of this community that is so attached to their land.

Muriel Gran Reserva Viña Viejas 2014 is a concentrated red wine with complex aromas of ripe black fruit accompanied by spicy notes, hints of coffee and touches of tobacco. On the palate it is smooth, silky and well structured. A medium to full-bodied wine with well-integrated acidity, velvety tannins and a very long finish.
