About Neno de Viña Somoza

Neno de Viña Somoza is a white wine crafted by the winery Viñedos Somoza in A Rúa de Valdeorras, Ourense. D.O. Valdeorras.

Viñedos Somoza is a winery established in the early 20th century by Victor Fernández, with the vision of producing wines from the fruit of his vineyards, following extensive efforts to revive indigenous grape varieties.

After two generations, Viñedos Somoza continues its operations employing the latest advancements in oenological technology, while upholding the viticultural traditions passed down. However, since 2015, they have undergone a significant transformation with the addition of Javier García (bodega 4 Monos, Madrid), aiming to vinify their 5 hectares of vineyards with minimal intervention, resulting in wines that fully express the potential of the grape variety and the terroir.

Neno de Viña Somoza is crafted from godello sourced from the finest vineyards in the region, featuring diverse soil types with a distinct Atlantic influence and continental character, with vines aged between 30 and 40 years.

The harvest is conducted manually in 15kg boxes. Once at the winery, the grapes undergo cold maceration for 12 to 48 hours. Following pressing and natural static settling, fermentation occurs with indigenous yeasts in stainless steel tanks at a controlled temperature, as well as in vats and French oak barrels. Upon completion of fermentation, the wine is aged on its fine lees in French oak barrels for less than a year.

Neno de Viña Somoza 2019 is a white wine of distinct character and complexity. Exhibiting a pale hue, it unfurls with aromas of ripe fruit, delicate lees, wild herbs, and a hint of flint. On the palate, it is flavorful and fruit-forward, with a harmonious balance. The finish is enduring and tinged with a pleasant bitterness.
