About Niepoort Coche

Niepoort Coche is a white wine aged in oak and made by Niepoort with the Rabigato, Códega and Arinto varieties in the DOC Douro denomination in Portugal.

You cannot mention Portuguese wineries without talking about Niepoort. A leading producer, firstly for their Port wines, but for some years now they have also been well known for their red and white wines made in the Douro region. The current owner, Dirk van der Niepoort, is responsible for making accessible wines with an authentic Portuguese character that are popular around the world.

Niepoort Coche comes from vineyards lying on the right side of the Douro river at an altitude of about 600 metres above sea level. These are old vines aged over 80 years old that grow in mica shale soils and are cultivated using environmentally friendly agriculture. The harvest is manual with a careful selection in the vineyards.

Once the Niepoort Coche grapes have been taken to the winery in 25 kg boxes, they are pressed at night and the resulting must is left to rest for 48 hours. Then fermentation begins in new and used 228 and 550 litre French oak barrels. It spends 12 months there until bottling.

Niepoort Coche is an achievement of balance between body and acidity. A light and fresh white but with a consistency that everyone loves.

2021

Niepoort Coche 2021 exhibits an intense and profound mineral character. On the nose, it reveals complexity, with toasted notes from the barrel, fine herbs, and a citrus profile reminiscent of lemon and grapefruit, complemented by a floral hint. On the palate, it is an elegant and delicate wine, with the presence of white fruit such as pear and apple, along with subtle spices. Its texture is voluminous yet not oily, with good concentration and a perfect balance with the wood. The finish is complex and creamy.                      
2018 Niepoort Coche 2018 is a creamy white wine with complex aromas of white fruit and citrus, floral notes and salty touches. On the palate, it is intense, mineral and elegant. A wine with a fresh acidity and a robust structure without being heavy. The finish is long, with subtle touches of dried fruit.
