About Niepoort Poeirinho

Niepoort Poeirinho is a single-variety Braga red wine from DOC Bairrada produced by Niepoort.

Niepoort was founded in 1842 and is run by the family it is named after. It is currently run by the fifth generation of the family. They use traditional Portuguese techniques such as grape treading, fermentation in cement tanks or aging in pipes, 550-litre port-aging barrels, whilst also using new technologies that ensure the grapes are handled with care. The winery has vineyards in different locations, some with strains that are over 100 years old, and an aging room in the town of Vila Nova de Gaia. 

The Niepoort Poeirinho vines are in the Cantanhede area and are small and very old, at around 100 years old. They are planted in clay-calcareous soils and pruned using the Guyot system. They are close to sea level and harvested manually.

Niepoort Poeirinho ferments in a tank for about 4 weeks and then finishes fermenting and ages in a large 2,500-litre barrel and undergoes malolactic fermentation. It ages in this barrel for about 20 months.

Niepoort Poeirinho was first produced in 2012 and carries the old name for the Braga variety in homage to the great Bairrada wines they made with this variety. It is a fresh and precise wine, considered by the producers as one of their best non-fortified wines. They only produce 8,000 bottles of this unique wine.

2014 Niepoort Poeirinho 2014 has a pale but vibrant violet colour. It faithfully and elegantly expresses the terroir through its complex aromatic profile. It evokes limestone, spices, cherries and berries. On the palate it is precise, with a firm structure of soft tannins and a high acidity that gives the wine a freshness and a good aging potential.
