About Orchard Lane Sauvignon Blanc

If there's one thing about younger siblings, it's that although they are just starting out, their path is somewhat smoothed by their elders. And that's exactly what happens with Orchard Lane, the younger sister brand of Sugar Loaf Wines, a small yet significant family winery in the heart of Marlborough, New Zealand. With 21 hectares of vineyards and its own bespoke production facility, Orchard Lane is already beginning to make its mark.

Nestled on a quiet lane that lends its name to the brand, Orchard Lane sits where apple orchards once flanked both sides of the road. Today, just a row of those gnarled trees remains, still offering fresh apples to eat during harvest. A poetic nod to its origins and the freshness that characterises the winery's wines.

Behind this venture are David and Kate Acland, the fifth generation of farmers and producers, proud of their legacy in crafting quality food. Today, they rear sheep, cattle, produce honey... and make wine. And like every good family story, the next generation is already learning the trade: their three young children actively participate in all family enterprises.

The wine that best embodies the spirit of Orchard Lane is their sauvignon blanc. The grapes hail from the Home Block and Papillon Block, situated on stony alluvial soils that impart minerality and structure. Each block is fermented separately in stainless steel to preserve the crisp aromas and flavours of tropical fruits. Afterwards, the wine rests for three months on its fine lees, gaining complexity without losing freshness.

The result is a vibrant, expressive, and perfectly balanced sauvignon blanc, which superbly reflects both the identity of Marlborough and the familial, close-knit spirit of Orchard Lane. Small in name, but grand in character and quality.

On the nose, you'll discover an explosion of tropical aromas with distinct notes of passion fruit and mango, accompanied by subtle citrus hints of grapefruit and an undertone of freshly cut grass. On the palate, its crisp and well-balanced acidity offers a juicy and rounded sensation, culminating in a long, clean finish that invites further enjoyment. This wine is an excellent choice for those seeking a fresh, aromatic, and characterful white.
