About Oriol Artigas Els Perles Blanco

When we say someone is "un perla" in Spanish, we refer to a person who dares to do unexpected, unconventional, or even slightly transgressive things. If anything defines José Pastor, an importer of Spanish wines in America, and the Catalan winemaker Oriol Artigas, it is precisely this groundbreaking spirit. Therefore, when they decided to join forces to capture the purest expression of the volcanic terroir of La Orotava in Tenerife, the name of their project could not have been more fitting: Els Perles ("The Pearls" in Catalan). It not only refers to the unique character of the wines born from this collaboration but also to the bold and somewhat irreverent attitude they both bring to their work.

In La Orotava, they work with two hectares of old vineyards, predominantly of indigenous varieties such as listán negro, listán blanco, and a small proportion of moscatel de Alejandría. The vines, planted on slopes descending towards the sea, resemble living sculptures entwined over the volcanic soil. The entire process is carried out completely by hand, without electricity or machinery, allowing gravity and meticulous manual labour to take centre stage. This method results in unique, rare, and captivating wines that reflect the island's pure essence.

A clear example of this philosophy is Oriol Ortigas Els Perles Blanco, a wine that encapsulates the authenticity of listán blanco from vineyards aged between 80 and 100 years. The grapes are macerated for five days and ferment with native yeasts in stainless steel tanks, where they then mature for nine months. The wine is bottled unclarified, unfiltered, and without added sulphites, allowing its pure character to express itself with complete freedom.

Oriol Artigas Els Perles Blanco reflects the soul of the volcanic land, the influence of the sea, and the passion of its creators. It is a testament that daring to be different, when done with respect and authenticity, can result in something truly unique.
