About Petrus

Petrus is a monovarietal Merlot red wine. It belongs to the AOC Pomerol, in Bordeaux, France.

Petrus is a winery that produces red wines that have acquired a legendary reputation. It is located ten kilometres from Bordeaux and three from Saint-Émilion. Its wines are the most concentrated and rich in Pomerol, very balanced and with unique penetrating aromas that make them unmistakable. The technical management of Petrus was in the hands of Jean Claude Berrouet, one of the most recognised winemakers in the world, and was then passed on to his son.

The vineyard’s soils are different from the soils of those that surround it, they are clayey and with a layer of gravels, whereas in the rest of Pomerol they are sandy, and they possess perfect qualities for cultivating Merlot.

The winery was one of the first to carry out green pruning of its vineyards in order to reduce production and to increase the quality of the remaining grapes, and the vines are only uprooted when they exceed 70 years of age.

Petrus was owned by the Arnaud family for about 200 years until the Second World War. It then passed into the hands of the Louard family before finally becoming the property of the Moueix family, who currently run it.

The soils of the Petrus vineyard consist of a layer of gravel located between two layers of clays. The total area of the plots is 11.5 hectares. The planting density is about 6,600 to 7,000 plants - a very high density that ensures that the production per plant is small but making the grapes balanced and concentrated. The average yield per hectare is about 40 hectolitres. They are manually harvested so that the grapes arrive in the winery in optimum conditions for producing a wine of the highest quality.

Once in the cellar, the Petrus harvest is fermented in cement vats at a controlled temperature to preserve and extract the fresh and fruity aromas of the grape. Once fermented, the wine is aged for 22 to 28 months in new French oak barrels. The ageing time to which the wine is subjected will depend on the quality of the vintage and the ageing potential of the vintage.

Petrus is an extraordinary wine that comes from a unique place in Pomerol. Put simply, an oenological gem.

2015 Petrus 2015 was a vintage that obtained 100 Parker points. It is a red with a colour ranging from medium to deep purple maroon. The nose reveals crushed black cherries, plums, blackberries and cedar with touches of anise, lavender, thyme and scree. In the mouth we perceive a wine with a medium to good body, which fills the palate with exuberant layers of blue, black and perfumed fruit that contrast with very mature and very fine tannins, and ending in a very lingering and mineral finish.
2013

Petrus 2013 boasts a profound depth of color. The bouquet is irresistibly appealing, featuring notes of dark cherries, iodine, and blueberries, complemented by hints of raspberry, plum, and cherry. On the palate, it exhibits a fresh and saline character, with medium body and fine-grained tannins. The profile is rich in fruity nuances. Harmoniously balanced with a sophisticated finish.
