About Puro Rofe Tinto

Puro Rofe is a red wine made by the Puro Rofe winery in the D.O. Lanzarote (Canary Islands) with the native Listan Negro variety.

Puro Rofe is the personal project of Carmelo Peña, a young winemaker who studied under Dirk Niepoort and Raúl Pérez, and Rayco Fernandez, a well-known wine distributor in Las Palmas. The two islander friends joined forces to try and showcase the innate qualities of Lanzarote’s volcanic terroir by using sustainable practices and minimal intervention. As a result they produce good wines with an authentic Canaries personality.

Puro Rofe comes from traditional vineyards in La Geria, the “grand cru” of Lanzarote, which is characterised by the black landscape of holes dug in volcanic ash (locally called rofe). This keeps the vines protected from strong winds from the Sahara and, at the same time, it covers the fertile soil and prevents water evaporation in high temperatures. The vines are cultivated using environmentally friendly agriculture and the harvest is carried out manually and earlier than usual.

The Puro Rofe grapes are vinified by plot. Firstly they tread the grapes in a traditional press and then the grapes are macerated, partly with whole bunches in an amphora, some in barrels and the remaining two parts in stainless steel. Fermentation is spontaneous with native yeasts and without filtering or clarifying.

The Puro Rofe wine is made against all odds in the fascinating La Geria terroir. A fresh red wine with an authentic island character.

2018 Puro Rofe 2018 is a juicy red wine with aromas of fresh red fruit and volcanic notes. On the palate it is fresh, crisp and light. A wine with a brilliant acidity and a marked island identity.
