About René Kientz Fils Gewürztraminer Le Metzig

When we speak of “generic”, the term might seem a tad uninspiring: ordinary, non-specific, something that doesn’t stand out on its own. However, in Alsace, generic wines are far from ordinary; they are the cornerstone of tradition, the essence of the terroir, and when expertly crafted, they become genuine stars at the table.

That expert is André Kientz, who has been at the helm of the estate since 1985. André not only manages but also preserves and nurtures his family's artisanal expertise. Each harvest is handpicked, the grapes are meticulously selected, and the viticulture is sustainable, minimising chemical treatments. Thanks to this approach, even the simplest wines are expressive and true to the spirit of Alsace.

The estate, situated in Blienschwiller, right on the wine route, boasts a variety of terroirs: clay and silt for the generic wines, granite for the Grands Crus. This allows for a wide range of profiles while always maintaining the family identity. Furthermore, the next generation is already being prepared under the guidance of Émeline Kientz, who brings freshness and energy, ensuring that tradition continues to shine among the Great Whites of Alsace.

Among their notable wines is René Kientz Fils Gewürztraminer Le Metzig, a gewürztraminer from 40-year-old vines, planted in clay and limestone soils that impart structure and depth.

In essence, even a wine deemed “generic” can reach high levels of quality and character when someone like André leads with passion. Gewürztraminer Le Metzig is a perfect example. Classic, elegant, and quintessentially Alsatian, it is poised to delight any wine enthusiast.
