The series "Big Bang Theory" not only amused us for years but also introduced us to characters who have lingered in everyone's memory: "nerds" consumed by every detail and "geeks" who immerse themselves passionately in their hobbies, ever curious, ever devoted to their world.
Thousands of miles away, in the wine region of Elgin, South Africa, Richard Kershaw, a British Master of Wine, also has his quirky side: nerdy in precision, geeky in his obsession with wine and terroirs. As he himself states: «As someone who enjoys details and has a touch of nerd and geek, I like to delve into the minutiae and metrics we face in winemaking.»
Among his explorations, Richard ventures with his GPS wine range to discover unique terroirs beyond the main region of Elgin. Plots with their own personality, telling of their soil, climate, and history. From this quest emerges Kershaw GPS Klein River Syrah, a wine that captures the essence of the place with minimal intervention, allowing the terroir to express itself with full force and elegance.
GPS Klein River Syrah springs from three-hectare vineyards, planted near the Klein River, on sandy and granitic soils. The sea breeze from Walker Bay, filtering through the Akkedis Valley, creates a temperate microclimate perfect for maturing the nearly 20-year-old vines. Each grape is handpicked, carefully sorted, and macerated for three days before spontaneous fermentation. For 19 days, the wine remains in contact with its skins, then ages for 16 months in Burgundy oak barrels, 43% new and the remainder second and third use, before being bottled unfiltered.
Richard Kershaw GPS Klein River Syrah is an elegant, complex, and characterful syrah, where the precision of a nerd and the passion of a geek are evident. A wine that pays homage to the terroir, the obsession with detail, and the enthusiasm that turns the science of wine into pure art.
