About Seña

There are gestures that only a bold individual can afford, and Eduardo Chadwick is one such case. In 2003, he dared to send his finest Chilean wines to Berlin to participate in a blind tasting before 80 prominent European critics. His wine did not win, but it achieved an honourable fourth place, an impressive result that put Chile on the map and confirmed that courage and audacity in the wine world can forge new paths.

This audacity is no coincidence. Competition seems to run in his veins. His father, Juan Alfonso Chadwick Errázuriz, won the Polo World Cup several times as captain of his team, in addition to being a visionary entrepreneur in the wine industry. From this heritage of determination and ambition emerges Eduardo Chadwick Jr., an industrial civil engineer, who at just 24 years old decided to exchange the family polo field for a vineyard, giving rise to Viñedos Chadwick, today one of the most emblematic and high-priced Chilean reds.

However, Chadwick's ambition did not stop there. In 1995, alongside the late Robert Mondavi, he created Viña Seña, a project aimed at producing a world-class Chilean wine. For this endeavour, both searched tirelessly for four years for the ideal terroir, until they found it in the Aconcagua Valley, a place that embodied the vision they had for their creation.

Seña, their eponymous wine, originates from northeast-facing vineyards located in Ocoa, at altitudes ranging from 282 to 510 metres. Its grapes—cabernet sauvignon, malbec, carmenere, and petit verdot—come from plantations established in the year 2000. The colluvial soils of the area exhibit varied textures and stone content. In the lower areas, loamy-clay soils with good drainage prevail, while on the slopes with gradients of 5 to 15 degrees, the stone content can reach up to 70%, maintaining low vegetative vigour and balancing production with quality.

The harvest is carried out manually, in 12-kilogram boxes. After harvesting, the grapes undergo a double sorting table, with 80% fermenting in stainless steel tanks while the remaining 20% does so in concrete vessels, at controlled temperatures between 24 and 28°C, with three pump-overs daily. The ageing process lasts 18 months, combining 85% in French oak barrels and 15% in foudres, achieving a perfect balance between structure, complexity, and expression of the terroir.

Seña is proof that Chile can produce reds capable of competing with the greats of the world, with a distinctly Bordeaux style and a unique identity that leaves no one indifferent who tastes it.
