About Sierra Cantabria Mágico

In 1855, Napoleon III ordered a ranking of the best Bordeaux wines to be showcased at the 1855 Universal Exhibition in Paris based on the reputation of the château and the market price. 150 years later this classification, with five Crus created by the Syndicate of Wine Merchants, is still used in Bordeaux and has inspired many other areas. However, it was not until the Master of Wine and one of the most famous wine critics in the world, Tim Atkin came along and dared do something, that Rioja began to be classified according to the quality of the winery and the wines he tasted. This classification method was inspired by the Bordeaux model and is published every year in his “Rioja Special Report”.

Among the most notable mentions, the Sierra Cantabria Mágico 2016 red wine received the “Overall Red Wine of the Year 2020” award, a little gem that comes from a clay-limestone plot of just over one hectare in the town of San Vicente de la Sonsierra (La Rioja Alta) growing Tempranillo, Garnacha and other red varieties. This is where the Eguren family, over five generations, have worked hard to express the full purity of the terroir. An inherited viticulture that adapts to the new times and uses organic agriculture with biodynamic treatments.

In the winery, Sierra Cantabria Mágico is vinified with the same care. After being destemmed by hand, berry by berry, it undergoes a pre-fermentation maceration for 5 days at a temperature of 8ºC. Fermentation takes place in wooden vats, with the Garnacha in one, and the rest of the varieties in another. Likewise, the skin-contact maceration lasts 17 days for the Garnacha and 21 days for the rest. Malolactic fermentation then takes place in new French oak barrels where the wine stays for 20 months.

With a very limited production and recognised by Atkin himself, Sierra Cantabria Mágico is a safe bet that will keep for more than 15 years. A wine that we have told you about early to give you the opportunity to try an exceptional wine at a very good price.
