About Skerlj Malvasia

Today, many rural structures have been restored and converted into hotels, restaurants and other tourist establishments that offer visitors an authentic experience of rural life. These houses are an example of the rich history and remain an important part of the architectural and cultural heritage of a region. In Central and Eastern Europe there are “osmizias”, a type of construction that emerged during the time of the Austro-Hungarian Empire that served both as a house for families and as a meeting place for the local community. With the aim of recovering and emphasising this piece of history in Trieste (Italy), near the Slovenian border, the Skerlj family took over one of these rural structures after the war and started selling their own wine in bulk. Over time, the estate turned professional and an agritourism building was created to receive guests who were interested in the world of wine. Today, the latest generation of the family, Matej and his sister Kristina, have gone one step further by bottling their own wines with a natural approach and giving maximum prominence to the terroir.


Their Skerlj Malvasia orange wine made from Malvasia is a clear example of their working philosophy. A wine that comes from old vines planted in limestone soils, and that, through organic agriculture and the influence of the sea and the mountains, achieves a manifestation of the character and identity of the region. In the winery, the grapes ferment naturally in wood with native yeasts and macerate with the skins. The wine is then aged for 24 months in wood before bottling.

As a result, Skerlj Malvasia is an orange wine that speaks for itself from the IGT Venezia Giulia. An elegant expression of a fantastic grape and terroir that gives us a wine of great personality and territorial and cultural vindication.

 

2020
Skerlj Malvasia 2020 unfurls a spectrum of aromas with prominent notes of stone fruits such as apricot and peach, interwoven with citrus undertones and a backdrop of dried herbs. On the palate, it presents a pleasing fullness and alluring maturity. Its distinctive texture and flavors reminiscent of ripe fruit stand out, delivering a lingering finish and a complexity that beckons one to explore it sip by sip. An intriguing and characterful orange wine, featuring an exceptional Malvasia.
 
2019

Skerlj Malvasia 2019 is a mineral orange wine with notes of exotic fruits, hints of sweet spices and touches of undergrowth. On the palate it is rich, fresh and very expressive. A wine with refreshing acidity, roundness and a very saline finish.
