About Tenuta di Carleone Il Guercio

Born blind in his right eye, Sean O'Callaghan was undeterred in his pursuit of success. This young Englishman, with a fervent passion for the world of wine, left his home to study oenology in Germany and, driven by his dream of crafting exceptional wines, joined forces with his friend Karl Egger to bring to life a project that now shines brightly in the enchanting region of Tuscany. Established in 2012 in Radda in Chianti, in the province of Siena, Tenuta di Carleone has earned a place in the hearts of wine enthusiasts, thanks to Sean's profound understanding of the terroir and local microclimates, as well as his unique affinity with the sangiovese grape.

In honour of his "great eye" for wine, Sean proudly presents Tenuta di Carleone Il Guercio, a wine that bears the affectionate nickname his friends have given him, which in Italian means "The One-Eyed". A wine made from 100% sangiovese sourced from a vineyard in Gaiole in Chianti, situated 700 metres above sea level and cultivated under organic and biodynamic principles. In the winery, it is vinified in concrete tanks with native yeasts for 5 months with 20% of the grapes including stems and refined for a year in the same containers to preserve the freshness and integrity of the fruit. Finally, it is bottled unfiltered, unfined, and with minimal sulphites.

Tenuta di Carleone Il Guercio possesses an overwhelming personality, reflecting Sean's unique and authentic vision. A wine that, much like its creator, invites you to view life from a different perspective. A true toast to the beauty that envelops Tuscany.

 

2021

Tenuta di Carleone Il Guercio 2021 boasts an alluring bright ruby red hue, reflecting its freshness. On the nose, it reveals a complex bouquet dominated by notes of sour cherry and raspberry, accompanied by hints of violets, Mediterranean herbs, and a touch of cinnamon. On the palate, it is elegant and well-balanced, with a vibrant acidity that accentuates the fruity flavours. The tannins are fine and silky, with nuances of liquorice and a subtle hint of oak. Its finish is long and refreshing, inviting continued enjoyment.
